Hollister Phlebotomy Technician

Phlebotomists are allied health professionals who draw blood from patients for medical testing. Many times, phlebotomists are the only ‘face’ that patients may associate with the medical laboratories that perform vital patient testing for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease.

For this reason, they must have excellent customer service and communication skills in addition to the clinical knowledge and skills they will need to collect patient samples like blood and urine. Laboratory results depend greatly upon the phlebotomist’s ability to collect quality specimens. Every time a phlebotomist draws blood or sends out lab samples, she is establishing or adding to the patient’s medical history. This key part of the patient’s health profile will be in the patient’s record for a lifetime.

The main duties of a phlebotomist include:

  • Collecting and processing specimens
  • Explaining the procedures to patients
  • Updating patient records
  • Preparing stains and reagents
  • Cleaning and sterilizing equipment

The Central Coast College Phlebotomy Technician program is designed to prepare students to take the phlebotomy exam and apply to become a practicing, certified phlebotomist in the state of California.* The course work includes safety, anatomy and physiology, patient preparation and blood draws, post puncture care, specimen transport, professionalism, and stress management.
