Central Coast College added the new Vocational Nursing certificate program in order to expand our profile of healthcare training programs designed for students who are motivated to quickly enter the medical field. Vocational nurses provide important medical care for sick, injured, or convalescing patients. Vocational nurses are responsible for many different tasks, including:
-
- Monitoring patients’ health
- Administering basic patient care
- Providing for the basic comfort of patients
- Discussing the care they are providing with patients and listen to their concerns
- Reporting patients’ status and concerns to registered nurses and doctors
- Keeping records on patients’ health
CCC’s new VN program is designed to teach students the basic skills and essential functions of vocational nursing. Students learn the skills to provide basic nursing care, administer medications, document a patient’s signs and symptoms, and perform therapeutic and rehabilitative measures. Courses in the VN program include:
-
- Fundamentals of Nursing
- Anatomy & Physiology
- Pharmacology
- Medical-Surgical
- Obstetrics & Pediatrics
- Clinical in Various Facilities
The Vocational Nursing program is designed to be completed in as few as 59 weeks. Students in the VN program complete hands-on training in labs as well as an externship in an off-site medical facility in order to gain critical real-world experience. By combining academic study with clinical practice, students gain both theoretical knowledge as well as hands-on experience, so they are prepared to transition confidently into their future positions.
The VN program at Central Coast College is approved by the California Board of Vocational Nurse and Psychiatric Technicians. Upon completion of the VN program, graduates will have met the minimum requirements for taking the Vocational Nurse License examination.
