What Is a Medical Assistant?

Medical assistants play a vital role in the healthcare field, working alongside doctors to provide patients with the highest level of care. Medical assistants work in the offices of physicians, hospitals, and other healthcare facilities, completing both administrative and clinical tasks. Medical Assistants, or MAs, also help to provide a means of communication between patients, doctors and other health care providers.

What Skills Should I Have for a Career as a Medical Assistant?

Medical assistants work directly with both patients and the entire care team, so excellent interpersonal skills are important. A medical assistant acts as a point of communication between the medical care team and the patient, so good communication skills are absolutely vital. In addition, medical assistants should also be very organized, have the ability to multitask, and be able to work both independently and as part of a team.

Where Do Medical Assistants Work?

Medical assistants are employed across the country, and graduates of medical assistant programs such as the one offered at Central Coast College may find work in doctors offices, clinics, hospitals, nursing homes, long-term care facilities, schools, or government agencies.

According to the United States Bureau of Labor and Statistics (BLS 2024), employment for medical assistants is projected to continue to grow at a rapid rate of 15% over the coming decade, adding about 118,300 new jobs to the U.S. economy.
