At Central Coast College, our Veterinary Assistant program is designed to give students hands-on experience working with animals and thoroughly prepare students for careers as Veterinary Assistants. Veterinary Assistants provide critical assistance and support to scientists, veterinarians, and veterinary technologists and technicians with their daily tasks. Common tasks for Veterinary Assistants include feeding, bathing and exercising animals, preparing for examinations and procedures, caring for animals after surgery, and giving medication and immunizations prescribed.

In this 38-week program, students learn the comprehensive skills and knowledge necessary to successfully work alongside veterinarians and veterinary technicians in a variety of animal care settings. Students in the Veterinary Assistant program receive first aid and CPR training, as well as real-world on-the-job experience through an Externship. Students who wish to continue their education may take an additional year of courses in order to obtain their Associate of Applied Science, Veterinary Technology degree,

In the Veterinary Assistant program, you will learn:

  • Proper restraining techniques
  • Assisting with radiology and ultrasound imaging
  • Maintaining and sterilizing equipment and facilities
  • Administering some medications and immunizations
  • Grooming procedures
  • Maintaining medical records and taking patient history

Graduates receive a diploma upon completion of the program and are prepared for immediate entry-level employment as Veterinary Assistants.

Central Coast College’s Veterinary Assistant program is offered in a hybrid-online format. Students learn classroom theory online, while completing hands-on training in on-campus labs. All students also gain valuable experience through an externship.

Many of Central Coast College’s Veterinary Assistant graduates go to work in animal clinics, veterinary hospitals, animal shelters, zoos, research labs, and pet boarding facilities, supporting veterinarians and animal care professionals. Our Career Services department provides every student with a wide range of career support services and comprehensive job placement assistance.

In Central Coast College’s Veterinary Assistant program, you’ll gain real-world skills including exam room preparation, intaking animals for exams, feeding, bathing, and exercising animals, caring for and monitoring animals after surgery or treatment, giving medications, and administering immunizations. Our hands-on training prepares you for the tasks employers are hiring for, so you can step confidently into your healthcare career.
