At Central Coast College, our Veterinary Assistant training program is designed to prepare students for careers in the veterinary field. Veterinary assistants are specially trained to provide critical assistance and support to scientists, veterinarians, and veterinary technologists and technicians with their daily tasks. As a veterinary assistant you can play an important role, assisting veterinarians and providing critical and compassionate care to many kinds of animals.
Through a combination of quality curriculum delivered by experienced faculty, and hands-on practical experience in on-campus labs and through an externship, Central Coast College’s Veterinary Assistant program gives students the experience working with animals they need to be prepared for careers as veterinary assistants. CCC students learn the comprehensive skills and knowledge needed to work alongside veterinarians and veterinary technicians in a variety of animal care settings.
Students in the Veterinary Assistant program learn to:

- Maintain and sterilize surgical instruments
- Intake animals for exams
- Feed animals
- Bathe animals
- Exerce animals
- Restrain animals during procedures
- Care for and monitor animals after surgery or treatment
- Give medications
- Administer immunizations

Instruction in Central Coast College’s Veterinary Assistant program goes beyond the classroom by including both an externship and opportunities to work in the field with partner organizations in the Salinas valley area. The externship component of the program is comprised of 150 clinical hours working in an off-site veterinary facility. Additionally, students gain real world experience in the field by participating in volunteer work with local organizations. As part of the curriculum, veterinary students volunteer twice weekly at the SPCA of Monterey County to assist with the treatment of animals. Veterinary students also volunteer on the Snip Bus, a mobile bus offering spay and neuter services for pets in Monterey County. Plus, veterinary students volunteer to treat rescue animals at the Wonder Wood Ranch, the Hidden Hills Ranch, and the Valley View Ranch Equine Rescue.
The Veterinary Assistant program can be completed in as few as 38 weeks, and graduates receive a Certificate of Completion, Veterinary Assistant diploma. Students who wish to pursue an advanced education may take an additional year of courses in order to obtain their Associate of Applied Science, Veterinary Technology degree.
